A coalition of retirees from the three senatorial districts of Benue State, yesterday cried out to the Governor, Samuel Ortom, that life is so unbearable for them due to the state government’s inability to pay their monthly pensions and gratuity.
This plea was made by the chairman of the coalition, Mr Michael Vembeh, during a courtesy visit to Governor Samuel Ortom, at the Benue Peoples House, in Makurdi.
While addressing the pensioners yesterday, the Deputy Governor, Engr Benson Abounu, who represented the governor, assured them that those whose biometric data have been captured will get payment of their monthly pension as from July, 2016.
He said the chairman of the coalition should be included in the committee that would quicken the process of the commencement of payment to them, and regretted the delay caused in the past.
Engr. Abounu stated that federal allocation to Benue State has been declining, pointing out that in June, it was N1.5 billion while the production of oil by Nigeria has reduced from 2.3 million barrels per day to about 600,000, due to the problems created by Niger Delta Avengers.
