Lai Mohammed leads Digital Switch over Monitoring and Evaluation Team to Plateau State

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has commended the role Plateau State  played in anchoring the successful launch of the switch from analog to digital transmission, saying despite some challenges, there was recorded success of the distribution of the Free TV Set Top  Boxes.

The minister said that the digital broadcasting play an added role in deepening and sustaining democracy, and encouraged the state government to assist citizens in purchasing Set Top Boxes.

In reacting to questions relating to free distributions of the Set Top Boxes, the Information Minister spoke of the challenges of getting citizens to pick up the Set Top Boxes and the difficulties of the citizens to text back code for their activation, which he said is very important for the digital transmission to avoid blackout, and stressed further the need for massive funding and contents development.

He warned on the illegal selling of the Set Top Boxes, stating that the digital team is already on top of the situation as irregularities are usually expected in positive venture such as this.

Earlier, the Plateau State Governor, Simon Bako Lalong, in his response appreciated the Federal Government for the honor as the pilot state for the digital switch over; he said that the workforce for the proper channeling and distributions of the Set Top Boxes for the switch over is in place, with the Commissioner of Information and other information practitioners to enable a successful digital transmission.

Governor Lalong added that the Set Top Boxes would be subsidized since the state government would partner with stakeholders to enable a hitch free purchase.

Furthermore, the governor said from the earlier stage of the digital switch over process, that he was doubtful because of the security challenges of Plateau State, adding that his administration is building a new Plateau anchored on the promotion of peace and tourism.
