The clean-up of Ogoni land oil spill has gone ahead with the community jubilating on its flag-off by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, despite President Muhammadu Buhari’s last minute cancellation.
Ogoni oil spill remediation has been on the top agenda of President Muhammadu Buhari since assuming office.
His scheduled visit had generated a lot of negative utterances citing his visit to Rivers State as “having political motives.”
Earlier, Governor of the State, Nyesom Wike, denounced the allegations saying that:” his presence in Rivers is not an occasion for political campaigns by anybody or political party. Rather it is an occasion and opportunity for us to demonstrate unity of purpose and our readiness to work together with Mr President to move Rivers State and the nation forward.”
The Governor had made it known that if President Buhari had made it to the event, his visit would have been” historic and significant and it marks his first official visit to the state since assuming office as the president of this great nation.
He further said: “it is most significant because Mr President is not on a political mission but to kick start the largest environmental clean-up in our nation’s history for which Rivers people and indeed the Niger Delta will remain grateful.”
